Story
Lubna & Thomas, known from “Ik Vertrek” 2024 – From the Netherlands to Costa Rica
From The Hague to the Osa Peninsula
In 2023, Lubna, founder of The Salty Jungle Family, and Thomas made a life-changing decision. Tired of the fast-paced, concrete jungle of The Hague in the Netherlands, they packed up their lives and ventured across the globe to the lush, untouched beauty of the Osa Peninsula in southern Costa Rica. Their journey wasn’t just about changing scenery—it was about healing, rediscovery, and building a dream in the heart of nature.
Lubna, recovering from a burnout, needed space, time, and a change of pace. The demands of life in the Netherlands had taken a toll, and it was time to step away from the pressures that had worn her down. Thomas, having recently sold his successful surf shop after a falling-out with his business partner, was also ready for a fresh start—one that didn’t just promise tranquility but also allowed for reconnection with nature and personal growth.
The Move
With their son Naim by their side, they left behind the bustling streets of The Hague for the remote and serene town of Puerto Jiménez, located on the Osa Peninsula in Costa Rica. Often regarded as one of the most biologically intense places on Earth, the Osa Peninsula promised a life closer to nature—an environment where they could heal, grow, and build something meaningful.
One year later, in 2024, the family welcomed their second child, Noé, making their new adventure feel even more complete. They called themselves The Salty Jungle Family, a name that captures the blend of saltwater from the nearby Golfo Dulce and the lush, vibrant jungle that surrounded them.
The Birth of The Salty Jungle Family
The Salty Jungle Family was Lubna’s vision brought to life: a shared mission to offer an immersive experience of the Osa Peninsula, combining the beauty of the jungle with the calming influence of the sea. With dreams of creating a sustainable and welcoming hospitality business, they launched their first ventures:
-
Don Jimenez Guesthouse
-
Osa Jungla Ecolodge
-
A French Bakery
Their story is one of passion, perseverance, and a deep respect for the environment. Together, they set out to create spaces that allow guests to experience the Osa Peninsula in all its beauty, diversity, and serenity—more than just a place to stay, but a haven for relaxation and a chance to reconnect with nature. They are equally committed to supporting sustainable tourism and local businesses.
Don Jiménez Guesthouse
Located in the heart of Puerto Jiménez, Don Jimenez Guesthouse offers a cozy, convenient place for those wanting to explore the area. Whether you’re visiting Corcovado National Park—one of the most biodiverse places on the planet—or simply looking to relax and enjoy the laid-back beach town vibe, Don Jimenez is the perfect base for your adventures.
It caters to all types of travelers: those needing a comfortable bed after a day of hiking or those preferring to unwind in town with easy access to beaches, restaurants, and local culture. With a personal touch that sets Don Jimenez apart, Thomas and Lubna ensure that every guest feels like part of The Salty Jungle Family.
Osa Jungla Ecolodge
For those seeking a deeper connection with nature, Osa Jungla Ecolodge offers an entirely different experience. Nestled in the heart of the jungle, the Ecolodge provides a true escape from everyday life, featuring sustainable accommodations and activities that immerse guests in the unspoiled beauty of the Osa Peninsula. Designed with sustainability in mind, the ecolodge minimizes environmental impact while showcasing the raw, untouched beauty of the peninsula—perfect for travelers who want an authentic experience without compromising on comfort.
The French Bakery
Expanding their footprint in Puerto Jiménez, Lubna and Thomas also opened a French Bakery, which quickly became a local favorite. Serving delicious pastries, freshly baked bread, and authentic French treats, it’s a cozy spot to start your day or wind down in the afternoon. Guests can enjoy a warm croissant and coffee while chatting with The Salty Jungle Family about upcoming adventures, or simply savor the atmosphere of this laid-back coastal town.
A Vision for the Future
What began as Lubna’s dream to embrace a simpler, more fulfilling lifestyle has evolved into a thriving, sustainable hospitality business. The Salty Jungle Family’s mission is clear: to provide diverse hospitality options that showcase the Osa Peninsula in all its glory—whether through the comfort of Don Jimenez Guesthouse, the immersive nature experience at Osa Jungla Ecolodge, or the warm aromas of the French Bakery.
But their journey doesn’t stop here. With plans for more eco-friendly retreats, local partnerships, and beyond, they are dedicated to building a community that values sustainability, relaxation, and respect for the environment. Their story is one of growth, healing, and gratitude for the beautiful land that has become their home.
For anyone seeking adventure, tranquility, and a genuine connection with nature, The Salty Jungle Family welcomes you to the Osa Peninsula—where the saltwater of the Golfo Dulce meets the jungle, and where unforgettable experiences await.
